Hitch 4, July 8 – July 17

Crew 1, American Trails Bridger Teton

Project Type: Teton Trails Restoration

Project Sponsor: American Trails

For their fourth hitch Crew 1 cleaned trail, built and maintained bridges, and worked on some retaining walls necessary for trail stability. This crew was short one of their members for much of the project but still accomplished some great work! During their hitch they even made some camp pizzas in the dutch oven. For their off day they found some live music to listen to and visited a local farmers market.

All Said and Done:

  • Cleared 10 miles of trails
  • Built 3 sections of retaining walls and rock work
  • Repaired bridges and replaced runner plans

Crew 2, Platte River Wilderness

Project Type: Mullen Fire Disaster Recovery

Project Sponsor: National Forest Foundation

For their fourth hitch of the season Crew 2 was clearing trail in the Platte River Wilderness Area. A highlight from their trip was visiting the World Footbag Association learning about its history and visited its hall of fame. During their hikes this crew also saw a mountain lion, scary stuff!

All Said and Done:

  • Cleared 11 total miles of trail

Crew 3, Curt Gowdy State Park

Project Type: Curt Gowdy Trails

Project Sponsor: State Parks

For their fourth hitch of the season Crew 3 worked in Curt Gowdy State Park on trails, trail maintenance, fencing, and bridge work. This crew got to do a little bit of everything over the last 10 days and absolutely succeeded. For their day off they went to Saratoga and relaxed at the hot springs and enjoyed some ice cream.

All Said and Done:

  • Cut down three trees and bucked and limbed one other
  • Built 5 rock and 11 wooden retaining walls
  • Added drainage to 3 sections of trail
  • Built a staircase
  • Stained 5 bridges
  • Built 10 sections of split rail fence

Crew 4, Trout Unlimited Green River

Project Type: Wet Meadow Restoration ABD

Project Sponsor: Trout Unlimited Green River

For their fourth hitch of the season Crew 4 got to play in the water and make some artificial beaver dams. They also felled some aspen and removed some old buck and rail fencing. Working in the water all hitch allowed for the crew to get a great lesson in fly fishing from their contacts. One thing the crew noted from their trip is seeing multiple rattle snakes!

All Said and Done:

  • Felled 15 Aspen trees
  • Removed 200 yards of buck and rail fencing
  • Constructed 49 artificial beaver dams

Veterans Trail Crew, Savage Run Wilderness

Project Type: Mullen Fire Disaster Recovery

Project Sponsor: National Forest Foundation

For their fourth hitch of the season the Veterans Trail Crew was hiking wilderness trails clearing trail corridor and installing some drainage where it was necessary for trail sustainability. With all their hiking, the crew really got to know how much one of their crew members knows about fire and forest ecology. For their off day they caught so many fish that they became bored with fishing and hung out at the campground.

All Said and Done:

  • Cleared 23 miles of trail removing 242 fallen trees
  • Build 8 drainages to help control trail erosion
  • Saw 6 moose
